Clean removal of unwanted tree stumps

Leaving a stump in place can create a trip hazard, encourage regrowth, make mowing awkward and delay replanting or paving. Stump grinding is usually the most efficient way to deal with the visible stump without excavating the whole root system.

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to shave the stump into woodchip. The depth depends on what you want to do next: shallow grinding can remove a trip hazard, while deeper grinding is better where turf, planting or a new fence line is planned.

What we check before grinding

• Access width for the grinder through gates, alleys and side paths
• Nearby utilities, irrigation, lighting cables and drainage
• Stones, metal, old fencing, nails or embedded wire
• Whether the grindings should be left, levelled or removed
• How close the stump is to walls, paving, sheds or boundary features

Stump grinding removes the stump bowl and major surface roots in the working area. It does not remove every deep root, which will naturally decay over time. If you need full root excavation for building work, we will tell you before quoting.
