Tree Pruning & Reduction
General pruning and size management for trees that do not need pollarding.
Pollarding and re-pollarding for suitable trees in Preston, with clear advice on whether pollarding is appropriate or whether crown reduction would be healthier.
Pollarding is not the same as topping. It is a managed pruning cycle where branches are cut back to established pollard heads, often on species such as willow, lime, plane and some poplars. Once started, pollards usually need repeat pruning at suitable intervals.
Starting a new pollard on a mature tree is a significant decision. Some trees tolerate it well, while others can suffer from decay, weak regrowth or stress if the work is too severe. We will advise when re-pollarding, crown reduction, thinning or removal is the more suitable option.
If the tree is protected by a TPO or stands in a conservation area, the intended pollarding work should be described accurately, including which parts of the tree will be cut and the reason for the work.
